Chargers Defensive Outlook 2012

The  San Diego Chargers defense has given the fans something to cheer about this season.  The addition of toughness and attitude is present amongst the players.  A.J. Smith has done a good job in bringing in new talent.  Especially bringing in players that love to play the game of football.

First name that comes to my mind, are first round stud, Melvin Ingram.  We heard about this kids speed and passion for the game in training camp.  We got a glimpse in preseason.  He showed it against the Oakland Raiders.  This kid can fly.  He has a knack for getting after the ball.  His burst off the line is down right scary good.  His ability as an all around football player will benefit him and the entire team.  His football IQ/fundamentals are of a seasoned vet.   He will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Jarret Johnson formerly of the Baltimore Ravens is proving to be a savvy leader on the field.  He leads by example to are younger players.  HIs toughness and ability to stop the run is needed.  He is an unsung hero in many NFL locker rooms for his gritty play.  Thanks for choosing the Chargers as your new team :).

This year is a make or break year for you know who…Yes that’s you mr. Larry English.  I fell in love with this pick in the 09′ draft.  I watched his You-Tube Video numerous times.  I thought he was the heir apparent to Shawne Merriman.  So far he is riding the bust line very closely.  Injuries have been his achilles heal.  He can not stay healthy.  There was a great article in the SDUT about his new mentality.  Not thinking of the past.  Thinking only of  being healthy and playing great for your team.  He flashed some moments this preseason. Against the Raiders he was close to making some plays….very close.  Keep it up Mr. English, I am rooting for you.

What else can I say about Eric Weddle.  I have said from the moment we drafted him.  He’s gonna be a great player.  He is what we thought he would be.  He is amazing and a half.  Really!  This guy has a nose for football.  He, just like “Super Melvin” are gifted football minds.  They can see plays happen before they do.  Thats not a learned trait.  Thats a true gift.  Eric Weddle deserved every penny we spent on him and more.  Thanks for staying put in San Diego.

Our 2nd rd draft pick is turning heads, in a good way.  Kendall Reyes is making his presence felt.  He had a great push against the Oakland Raiders.  He can be a very disruptive player.  This pick is looking like the right move.  He is the reason the Chargers decided to part ways with Luis Castillo. The right move San Diego.  The overpaid Castillo just could not stay healthy.  Plus, he was a body on the field and nothing else.  Sorry bro, but its true.

The defense is lead by a long time Charger Coach, John Pagano.  His brother is the Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Chuck Pagano.  He has football in his blood.  I like that we hired within.  He has had the opportunity to learn from some of the great defensive minds in today’s NFL.  Wade Phillips, Ron Rivera to be the top of the list.  This defense looked good against the Oakland Raiders.  We left only the middle of the field open.  The defensive push upfront was evident.  Carson Palmer had to get rid of the ball quickly.  He did not have the time we gave opposing QB’s last year.  So far, I like what this defense is showing us what it can be.  Let’s create some fear in opposing QB’s.  We need that in San Diego.  06′ was the last time our D was fearsome.

The pieces are in place.   Lets see what this defense does the rest of the year.  I am looking forward to watching are D create some havoc!
